2011 slowly comes to an end...

I hope everyone had a wonderful festive season!!!

The year 2011 slowly draws to an end and in about 17hrs we will celebrate 2012 in South Africa...

Personally I don't do New Year's resolutions but I do reflect on the year gone by and draw my conclusions from it.

How has the past year been financially, health wise, work wise, family wise etc etc and from there I will attempt to make it a better New Year.

Looking back I am proud because I have achieved a lot:
My health HAS improved, financially I was ok the past year although it could be better ;), my work has improved, I noticed people copying or taking inspiration from my work! well that has to tell something, lol, family wise a lot has happened, I am a Grandma now of a beautiful little boy Alex, I would love to be a bit closer to some of my family though but that will happen if and when they are ready! You know what they are saying: you have to let go of those you love for them to come back....

All in all it was not a bad year at all but it could be better, there is always room for improvement..., so my New Year's resolutions will be based on the above...

Last but not least a big thank you to all visitors to my blog, one big thank you in particular to Richard of http://rvpainter.blogspot.com/ for all comments posted and the encouragement throughout the last year, it was very much appreciated, so very often you put a smile on my face!!

Enjoy the last hours of 2011, reflect, be grateful and look positively into the future!

Sometimes one has to step in and do what needs to be done even if it is very uncomfortable... I hate confrontation I really do, but what I hate even more in un-professionalism...

This painting here was on commission at a local frame shop, usual terms & conditions.

I am passing this shop quite regularly and noticed from the beginning that this painting was hanging skew and had no label or price attached although I supported this piece with 2 pages of information on me, the artist and the artwork.

So I approached the lady owner and discussed this matter, she agreed it would rectified.

Now for 3 weeks I had not been able to check on the painting so I was highly upset when on Sunday I saw that nothing at all had changed! The painting still hanging askew and no price and somewhere on the sideline...

I don't know how you would feel, but for me it was like a slap into my artist's face so to speak, just good it was weekend and I had time to calm down ;)

To cut a long story short, I have just collected my painting and also told her that not only am I disappointed but that it is in my opinion very bad business practise....

What would you have done?? Have you ever had similar experiences?

Well, needless to say I will have my framework done somewhere else in future....

A lesson learned: Not only will I supply the documentation with my artwork but also the appropriate labels, which then only need to have the price added...

4 weeks until Christmas...

One of the traditions celebrated in Germany and may be somewhere else, not to sure, is celebrating the Advent, the 4 Sundays leading up to Christmas.
Every Sunday 1 candle will be lighted, until all 4 candles are alight, the last Sunday before Xmas. This time reminds me of the smells of baked goods, candle lights, little one's anticipating Xmas and time spend with family.

When I was a child, maaaany moons ago, it was the time of first snow, riding the sleigh etc etc...

This is one of my paintings I did earlier this year, didn't like it so it ended up in the pile of unfinished, unliked paintings... lol

Last week as I went through this pile I pulled it out and re-worked it a little and voila it looks much much better now; all it needed was a bit of 'chunky' and a bit of paint paint here and there and I am satisfied.

A project I finished today, there are some other projects I am still working on, some very small one's with detailed work.. but today I needed to do some loose work, strong colours...

Hidden in a corner I found a panel with heavy texture applied, not sure where or when I wanted to use it but it came handy as I said above: I desperately needed to do some abstracts... ;)

Looking at this painting now it inspires me to do a larger abstract in similar colours, and when I say large I mean LARGE - I am looking at my 102 x 172 mm/30 x 40" canvas standing there... lol

Breathe Vincent, breathe...

The other day I happened to tune in on the movie 'Lust for Life' the life of Vincent van Gogh from 1956... In this movies the viewer watches Vincent van Gogh, frantically working on his paintings.

He is obsessed by colours and mood and we see him working day and night frantically, obsessed ...

Watching this movie I couldn't help but laughing out loud at times, did i see myself there ever so often, at some statges I had tears in my eyes, not so much because of the movie but because of the realization seeing myself there.

Please don't get me wrong I am not implying to have VvG's genius but I can so relate to his passion or shall I say obsession?

Mood, colour a situation, a place, scenery, evokes something deep inside me which I can not ignore, I have to follow this passion and when this happens I find myself almost frantically preparing a few canvasses, impatiently waiting for them to dry; then the first brush strokes or layer applied in the wee hours of the morning sometimes still in my pjs, lol

This urge to paint - to bring an ideas on to canvas, can continue for several day until the bottom of this creative well is reached and deep exhaustion setting in. It is an exhaustion in body, mind and spirit, unable to move or think until the next time when a certain color, mood or image triggers this creative wave again.

Following many artists, writers and visual, on blogs and FB I did notice quite a few struggling with these symptoms of creative high followed by absolute exhaustion, emptiness or even despair

Are we all adrenaline junkies of some sort? With subsequent adrenaline exhaustion? Was van Gogh an adrenaline junky? An interesting thought...

A remark by a therapist the other day made me smile: " breathe until the stress passes"...

Would any great art ever been created if the artist had breathed until the adrenaline high had passed? Would we see any great paintings by van Gogh or Pollock etc? I doubt it!

For me it means in future I will not breathe until the stress passes, but rather learn to ride this wave of adrenaline gently and purposefully (like a wave surfer) stretching it as long as possible until inevitably this wave comes to an end. As with everything in life there is an up and down, it only depends on us on how high we can go and how deep we will fall

Painting in a Group

After almost a year and a lot of persuasion I joined a painting group this morning. If you have been following me here or on FB then you know I am not a group painting person... I absolutely hate it ;)

Let me start from the beginning; after I made up my mind I first was so ill that I thought I would not make it today I was still a bit groggy but I went. (I am dealing with multiple chronic illnesses...)

It was a nice group indeed in a nice surrounding with everyone doing their own painting. It took me a while to adjust to a new space, spread out my utensils and began working.

I had prepared a panel as I intended to work on another Monet-like painting. First I tried very looooooose brushstrokes, hated it, so wipe off, then I used colours I was so not happy with, you guessed it another wipe off. Almost after halftime I settled into My space, My routine when I realised something was terribly wrong but couldn't put my finger on it.

In the meantime I am getting stressed, a no no I am not supposed to stress... so I am breathing, belly breathing to calm down again. So the remaining time I just fiddled around a bit trying to figure out what went wrong - and only now I realized I had the wrong panel!!

Meaning: I usually paint on canvas or canvas on panel but today I had a board, flat, glossy, slick, sliding board, what was I thinking??

I had prepared a few boards making them slightly rough similar to working on canvas, but no I had a very smooth panel, so no wonder I struggled... well there is always a next time... ;)

All in all I survived, almost enjoyed it, but am now exhausted. Will I go again, may be, I think I should give it the remainder of this month before making a final decision.

I still hate painting in a group though ;)

Cycles

As I mentioned in an earlier post, since October 2009 I painted almost every day. Looking back it is interesting how I went through cycles of different colours, different tools and subjects.

It started out with a red phase, which is really so not me, lol

to be replaced by softer colours..... yes this is me,

to a green phase just now, mmh, not really my colour either,
but I go with the flow since I do paint intuitively... and I do trust my inner wisdom or guidance

And not only colours changed but also subjects painted, from landscape to seascape, female figure, african inspired paintings. What ever intrigued me or challenged me I would paint.

With each and every one of my paintings I learned something, about myself, my likes and dislikes, my strengths and weaknesses.

All together, looking back, it has been a very interesting, challenging, humbling experience and I am looking forward to my next year of hopefully ONE PAINTING A DAY...

After a long time I started painting in oils again; Leonie pointed out using paraffin instead of turpentine. So I tried that yesterday and my lungs are fine, not sure yet in how far it triggers the other issues but I will see...

This painting again was inspired by Monet, one of his light blue waterlily paintings.

It is not my aim to copy his paintings but rather have it as a reference and allow my own painting style to flow into it.

2 years of painting every day

Today I realized it has been two years of painting every day...well almost every day.

Painting helped me when I went through agonizing physical and sometimes emotional pain. There were days when I made myself get up to paint, sometimes just for an hour and crawled back into bed, at times in tears because of the pain and/or my inability to put onto canvas what I wanted to...

There were days where I felt soooo inadequate in what I was doing. But there were also triumphs, smaller and larger and of course friends and my dear son and his fiancee cheering me up, believing in me when I didn't, sometimes loving my work, sometimes it ended being hung up in the toilet ;)

During these 2 years only 2 paintings were destroyed by me with all emotions going into it and it felt good :D !

What a journey this has been for me personally no one can imagine and as they say it is the journey that matters not the destiny...

The painting above, Into the Sun, © Angelique, 2009, was painted as a promise, a promise that the sun will shine again, and I will fly into the sun. (There is a little bird in the painting,centre bottom)

Luckily I did not paint over this painting as I had intended, a gentle soul prevented me from doing this. She will know who she is ;) Thank you!

A little fun project...

I did this piece for my grand-child nursery, knowing the colour scheme I mixed a bluish/turquoise colour which I then rolled, with my favourite tool the rubber roller, on to the canvas leaving some of the black background to shine through.
The heart shape was outlined with charcoal and some white added.

I love the way it turned out esp with the texture the roller created, great fun and it looks stunning in the nursery, if I may say so myself... ;)

Art Demo with Leonie Brown

After some introductions of her work and tools it was hands on for Leonie.
Here is one of the two panels Leonie had prepared with Acrylics; now she started mixing and applying oil paints.

Leonie on her second board and the class closely watched by
LULU... her assistant ;)

The (almost) finished product - a Leonie Brown Original in Turner-esque Style as she calls it.

All in all it was a very relaxed and informative morning, we all learned a lot and now it is back to our own easels and apply the one or other thing we have learned.

These two paintings were done about a year ago. Both of them on a black background, both of them 99% with a rubber roller, just the fine details were added with a brush.
About 5 layers of paint were applied on those paintings, tideous and time consuming as each layer had to dry thououghly before continuing.

The same technique was applied on

The 'Golden Pears'© Angelique 2010 on the black background only one layer of red was added...

This was actually the very first 'green' painting I did after mixing my new greens for a different painting.
I love the way how I get sometimes new ideas just by mixing colours, rubbing off paint from a panel, these little 'happy' or sometimes not so happy accidents, ;) as they all teach me something or propel me into new directions

This little painting was done on a

6 x 8" = 15 x 20cm canvas panel with acrylic

I liked the different greens on the black canvas and how the black breaks up the green giving it a very interesting structure.

A different green, slightly darker, was used to create a Water Lily painting which I will post tomorrow...

Here I attempted a slightly abstract version.
Multiple layers of paint were painted on heavy texture, resulting in some quite interesting 'water reflection', some charcoal was added for the outline of the bird.

For years I had a print of Salvatore Dali's Butterfly painting, not sure about the proper title. It is one of the few paintings by Dali I really admire!

Today I started working on a painting which will be my interpretation of this, as usual I will be using a lot of texture and limited colours...

As I said I had a copy for years but what struck me today, as I started working, how many triangles Dali used in this painting...it never ever really hit me until today!

A few weeks ago I started my art journal and boy I love it. A lot of times I hear people saying they don't know what to paint...; well I am the opposite, I have so many ideas in my mind that I don't know where to start or what to do first, so keeping this journal helps me to get organized, to stay focused on my work.

I have a normal A5 hard-cover exercise book in which I write, and doodle, and glue images of things that I feel I want to follow up or include in my paintings.

At the same time I also put the preliminary sketches for the work I am busy with in it together with what paints and mixtures I used...

Give it a try today and remember there is no hard and fast rules on how to go about it!

Look what is on my easel - sort of...

The other day I found these new size boxed canvasses 6 x 18" = 15x46 cm, which are the one's on the left of the pic

Usually I would use the larger 10x30' = 25x76cm size but I must admit I really like the smaller size.

Esp considering the current economy where people don't want to or can't spend a lot of money on art this smaller size might be a good choice.

As you can see, texture paste has been applied, ,then gesso 2x and now I am waiting to get started.

There are 2 small one's and 2 of the larger one's in the making, so stay tuned...

Magnolia Painting

Some years ago I came across an artist in the US who paints only on a black background and since then I was intrigued.

During the past years I did paint different backgrounds as can be seen on my images, yet I do find the stark black background brings out a subject the best.

Lately I see a few artists using dark blues which would be an alternative but for me it is not the same, nor is the dark browns and/or using the background technique in Rembrandt style.

For me personally I find the simple black background pushes the subject to the foreground and the attention remains here, plain and simple and elegant...

At the end of the day it is all about finding one's own voice/style in painting...

It has been awhile since my last (art) painting, but I managed to do a few small one's on some days.
The main focus on these small, A5 sized, paintings was to try out something new.

Here I painted on a board painted black, first gessoed, then the black paint was applied and then the flower painted.

It needs a bit 'tidying' up still but all in all I like the result.

Also this was painted using brushes, some new one's I had just purchased, so no palette knife on this one.

I used the same flower and painted it with a palette knife but am still not to happy with it, once it is finished I will post it.

Tomorrow we celebrate Women's Day in South Africa, so Happy Women's Day to all Women out there, have a lovely day!!!

There are always times where I doubt myself, the route I am taking, working in solitude and receiving quite some bad attitude because of it and often ridiculed...

But reading this particular article confirmed to me that I am indeed on the right track ;))

I had also questioned the value, for me, of joining the local art associations, esp after exhibiting just now where I realized I am not following their mainstream kind of works... the same applies to judged works.

So it appears I have to continue my solitary path, my poor son, always having to lift his mother's spirit ;)))

If you are serious about selling your art you need to work on your business skills as well!

I know - it is not my favourite part either, but luckily I grew up in a business, learned from the bottom up so to speak and running my own workshops for the past 15 years I always had to promote myself.

So running a business as such is not foreign to me, but for many artists it is. But where do you start?

There are 2 very good books I HIGHLY recommend reading:

The first book I would like to recommend is by well known South African Artist Ann Gadd, Making your Art work, is the title of her book

Although quite business-wise I decided to get the book and what a book it is! Not only is Ann down to earth, her style is easy readable and solutions to many problems are given. Also, since I am coming from a complimentary healing background myself I loved the little exercises in her book.
Don't we all have some kind of emotional blocks preventing us from growing further and to be the best we can be?

The book is written with humorous anecdotes and insights and is the first of its kind to be written by an artist in South Africa. It is targeted at people who want to create a living from their hobby, as well as students wishing to make a career of art.

The next book actually takes it further I would say, more on that later

Some afterthoughts

This last exhibition was a very good experience for me indeed!!!

As I heard only one painting got sold, not one of mine unfortunately, but it doesn't matter!

Really? Really! Because I learned soooo much!

I learned to mingle with the crowd, listening what people had to say about my art and the art of others, I learned to explain what I am doing and why and how, I learned from a few mistakes, mine and others and I learned I am almost back to the old me again and it feels good!

My son would challenge me frequently asking me what kind of people are you trying to reach/selling. To be honest I did not know, I was just painting, excuse me... but during the exhibition whilst talking to someone it actually hit me. Now I am ready to write down my artist's statement which I will put on my blog once finished.

Another thing I noticed, quite a few artists I approached did not have business cards!?!? Also many artists don't seem to be interested in networking which was a very interesting observation for me. Well, there are a few that do and I do hope we will go from strength to strength.

One of the things I noticed and will certainly change is not to place my signature on the side of my painting. A few people were looking for the signature and evtl. looked up the artist's name on the little label on top.

Exhibition - the Opening

Just a quick post on the exhibition which opened last night.

Wandering through the artwork displayed I enjoyed the different variety and styles displayed. There is everything available from absolute delicate realist paintings, mixed media and abstracts...
In the price category the same applies, there is something available for every pocket.
Also what I found quite intriguing was to find the different influences of artists not present, meaning there was art displayed which clearly showed influences of local artist workshops, such as Leonie Brown, Jannie Jordaan, Louis Pretorius and even Tammy Leisching.... Go and see for yourself, the exhibition is still open until 1 pm today and there is a farmers market outside at the same time! More posts and thoughts on this exhibition later with some pics.

Oh well of course some of my paintings are displayed there as well! ;))

How to paint Aspen Trees:

Did you know that aspen grow in large clonal colonies ( a group of genetically identical plants - so in fact, aspens are clones of one another within the colony!) This is a true piece of information - trust me - as I researched it to the point of exhaustion!
To further validate my extensive research, individual trees can live for 40 - 150 years - BUT - I hope you are ready for this..........the root system of the colony in some cases can live for thousands of years! One colony in Utah titled PANDO is claimed to be 80,000 years old!! No lie - trust me!

Anyways here I go...........................

This is 16 x 8 on heavy linen canvas paper using a large brush with gobs & gobs of paint loaded onto it. Trees have texture - so texture is the word of the day - at least my day - which is a day off ------ did I mention that?

This morning I went through my paintings and decided to add Two African themed painting for the upcoming exhibition as well.

One is the 'Three Women Walking' on red and the other one my 'Guinea Fowls'. This is a painting I had stored away, so I finished that one up and am now busy with cleaning up the edges, tedious work but listening to the radio helps....

At least now I know which airspace in Europe is closed, what star-sign Major Patricia is, same as mine, heard Rod Suskin speaking, learned about Africa Day, had no idea there was such thing... all in all a very productive day!

So I guess I am almost ready for the exhibition, now filling out all the forms, get some cash for the hanging fee and hoping I haven't forgotten anything ;)

When it strikes, it strikes...

The creative juices are flowing...

I just felt the need to update this blog. For the past few months I followed different leads and ideas on how to design a blog, what should and should not go in it and learned a few valuable lessons.

Looking at my pages tonight I just wanted to change things and remembered another artist's blog and thought I give it a try and see how it would work. Well I must admit I like it, it is more colourful, more interesting in my opinion. Let me know how you feel, feedback is always welcome

1 LITTLE - 2 -LITTLE - 3 LITTLE ..... No. II

24 x 18 on heavy linen canvas paper. Apple shapes were first painted in very expressively with A GENEROUS SUPPLY of Impasto Gel and then the various colors were added wet into wet very quickly with a large brush. At times the paint was also induced with Impasto Gel. The resulting effect in sections of the painting is the "opel shine" that I've spoken about. Once again painted with emotion, expression, gusto, rusticity (still love that word) and a sense of motion and movement. I feel the "opel shine" contributes to the sense of motion and eliminates the "static" look of a still life - thus it gives it life in the expressive sense.

The Impasto Gel gives texture to the surface. I throw in some color to develop a road map of where I'm going with this piece.

Throw in some greens and some darker reds for shadows

Painting fruit is fun as the indentation where the stem protrudes is sometimes a challenge to develop the depth on what of course is a flat surface

Can't forget the stem shadows either!

Well that was fun! Now all three stems are done!!

An experiment

This one was an experiment which included spray-paint

First a dark background was painted , then the 'trees' placed on the board and the spray-paint applied. After drying the trees were worked in with a palette knife and some of the white spray paint muted.

I know I haven't posted anything new lately which doesn't mean I have been idle... Tried a few new things, some of which is not worth publishing, but this one I liked so here it is.

This whole painting was executed with 2 colours plus white only.

Mist is something very intriguing for me, the whole world changes, sounds are muted so is the light, it can be scary or comforting depending of one's frame of mind...

Nature has ten thousand colors and we've taken it into our heads to reduce the spectrum to twenty. That's what painting is. We're never satisfied and on top of everything else we have to help the critics earn their livings...

Revisited - Traditional Women

I was going through some of my old paintings as I was trying to decide which way to go for my next projects and came across this one...

This one is actually an interesting story in itself. I had just finished the three women and was ready to put the varnish on when I decided to put the head of a child on the back of one of these women, and I am not kidding you now, a few weeks later I was told I am going to be a granny, now how is that...

This painting was executed with artist's grade acrylic on 61x97cm boxed canvas, no need to frame!

I have manipulated the image a little bit in order to show the highly textured females, the red is actually a beautiful deep red.

I am just taking a few days off in order to re-align myself before starting new projects. As much as I loved doing what I was doing, it was not really where I wanted to head, if that does make any sense!?

Yesterday I went through some of my older, last year's paintings, finishing off the edges, signing and varnishing when I realized that is where I want to go back to. So let's see, this weekend is going to be very busy with other excitements to which I am looking forward to and next week it is back to the easel.

These figs are still a bit green but already showing some 'blushing'
When I finished this painting and stepped back I realized these figs were 'talking', don't you agree?

As usual I worked with a very limited choice of colours applying several layers of paints to get to this finished product

Here I worked basically with 2 colours plus white, LOADS of white.
I simply love working with limited colors and will continue to do so.

For me personally and I think it applies to many people nowadays, we have an overload of impulses in every way, all our senses are constantly bombarded.

With my paintings I am attempting to bring back some peace and quite back into our lifes.

This is a painting I finished in February which was my birthday pressie for me, ;) hanging now in my little dining area.The chandelier is a bit low and needs to be moved a bit but I am currently unable to stand on a ladder or bend my neck, so it has to stay for the time being...

A few more paintings were finished off last week all of which will be exhibited and for sale in April, more details closer to the time!

I am also busy with a few studies on new subjects, which I will put into larger paintings next week.

The weekend is promised to be sunny and warm, so lets get out and enjoy as long as it lasts!

A project I finished today, there are some other projects I am still working on, some very small one's with detailed work.. but today I needed to do some loose work, strong colours...

Hidden in a corner I found a panel with heavy texture applied, not sure where or when I wanted to use it but it came handy as I said above: I desperately needed to do some abstracts... ;)

Looking at this painting now it inspires me to do a larger abstract in similar colours, and when I say large I mean LARGE - I am looking at my 102 x 172 mm/30 x 40" canvas standing there... lol
