One of the traditions celebrated in Germany and may be somewhere else, not to sure, is celebrating the Advent, the 4 Sundays leading up to Christmas.
Every Sunday 1 candle will be lighted, until all 4 candles are alight, the last Sunday before Xmas. This time reminds me of the smells of baked goods, candle lights, little one's anticipating Xmas and time spend with family.
When I was a child, maaaany moons ago, it was the time of first snow, riding the sleigh etc etc...
